Getting VIT registered from Ireland

Updated 26 October 2026. Every fact below is checked against the official source linked next to it. Fees and rules change, so always confirm on vit.vic.edu.au before you pay anything.

What VIT is and why it's the gate

The Victorian Institute of Teaching is the regulator. No VIT registration, no Victorian classroom, in any school: government, Catholic or independent. It's the single slowest part of moving, which is why it's the first thing to start and the first question a school will ask about you.

The good news for Irish-trained teachers: your qualifications are assessable, your English is exempt from testing, and you can do the groundwork from Ireland. Here's the order.

Step 1. Get your qualifications pre-assessed (do this from Ireland)

If your teaching qualification is from outside Australia or New Zealand, VIT requires a pre-assessment of your overseas qualifications before you can apply for registration. You can do it before you leave Ireland, and you should, because nothing else can start until it's done. The pre-assessment fee is $292.84 (VIT fee schedule).

Step 2. Know which registration you're applying for

Most Irish teachers apply for provisional registration. Full registration straight away is only available if you've held full registration in Australia or New Zealand in the last five years plus recent teaching there, which rules out most people coming direct from Ireland. Provisional is normal, schools hire on it, and you move to full registration once you're teaching. The detail is on VIT's interstate and overseas page.

Step 3. English language: you're exempt

VIT's English language requirement has an exemption for teachers whose initial teacher education was completed in the Republic of Ireland, among a short list of countries. So no IELTS for Irish-trained teachers. Source: VIT English language requirements.

Step 4. Police checks, and the timing trap

You'll need a national criminal record check for each country where you've lived for 12 or more consecutive months in the last 10 years while over 18. For most people that's Ireland, plus anywhere you've done a stint abroad. Two things catch people out:

  • The check must be national, not regional, and from a provider VIT accepts.
  • If you're applying from overseas, the check must be issued within 7 days of submitting your application. So don't order it months early; line it up against your application date.

The rules are on VIT's interstate and overseas page and criminal history checks page.

Step 5. Apply, from Ireland or after you land

Here's the part nobody tells you: you generally apply through MyVIT after arriving in Australia, but VIT accepts applications from overseas up to 3 months before you arrive if you have an employment offer from a Victorian school, an offer from a Victorian teaching agency, or evidence that registration is needed for your visa. Apply more than 3 months before arrival and the application is closed without consideration. Source: VIT.

This is exactly where we earn our keep. When a school wants you, the offer unlocks the early application, and we keep the school warm while VIT does its thing.

What it costs

ItemFee
Overseas qualification pre-assessment$292.84
Initial registration (overseas qualifications)$203.00
Annual renewal$131.30

All figures from the VIT 2026-27 fee schedule, in Australian dollars.

How long it takes

VIT says most applications take 4 to 6 weeks to assess once all documentation has been submitted, and flags that overseas qualification assessment and overseas criminal checks can extend that (VIT timeline page). Budget for longer, not shorter, and get the pre-assessment moving early so the slow parts overlap with your planning instead of your start date.

The short version. Pre-assessment from Ireland now. English test: none. Police checks: national, timed to your application. Application: after you land, or up to 3 months early once there's an offer. Which is one more reason to register with us before the hiring window opens.
